Somnath Hore, eminent Sculptor, Printmaker, Painter and Teacher, is regarded as an artist who stood ground with the working class and marginalised. A Padma Bhushan awardee, he was born in Chittagong in 1921. He has taught at multiple art institutions including Santiniketan.
The anguished human form has widely been reflected in Hore's figuration. His contorted bronze figurines recalled the agonies of famine and war, and became iconic emblems of modern Indian art. Somnath's artistic journey culminated in his Wounds Series of paper pulp prints, where he achieved a unique brand of abstraction, still holding onto humanism.
He died in 2006, at the age of 85.
